TheTip for Bangkok Biennial 2020

Nov 7th - Dec 25th 2020

March 13th - April 3rd 2021

Sept 17th-Oct 9th 2021

TheTip is proud to present the very first collaboration between Daniela Kneip Velescu and Alys Owen. The Berlin and Glasgow based artists offer contemplation on contemporary narcissism and a possible anarchy of self-esteem. Their works demonstrate a fearless desire to enact, and also reflect, on omphaloskepsis. The discursive minefield of late capitalism is seemingly embraced, if only to allow their questioning to emerge from within, resulting in an oxymoronic mixture of critical joy and reluctant compassion.

Tower-like file folders start to build a conversation; an attempt to exchange ideas (just as one's own associations are usually followed and one can get lost in thought!) Apple, pear, pasta...

"Oh, what did you say?!"

Exploded views of home furniture stick to the painfully technical object of a file folder. Here the worlds of private and professional life collapse into each other. Both are different sides of the same coin; materialized structures of law, order and society's moral compass. The crude manner of constructing and rhytmising the conceptual content into a sensual experience by (ab-)using this vocabulary of forms generates an uncanny oscillation between "autonomous" sculpture and “functional display”.

As a result, the audience is invited to consider an impressive yet unstable set of references to the human body, and the things contained within. Pop cultural images (like exposed navels of pop stars) are shattered from within by the duplicitous nature of physical desire and human reproduction. The images, texts and objects of this exhibition fan out into a panopticum of materials, their presentation resisting any coherent consistency, in favour of an exploration of the arguably more difficult yet rewarding route to uncertainty.

The exhibition will develop in two physical stages, before finally evaporating into an online project, continuing to exist as a vehicle for provocation and destabilization.
